Fences- Integrity through Action

Integrity is the topic in which our class is shaped. As a result of the way we examine character's decisions and motives, we gain, or can better assess the true nature of integrity. The moral judgement that shapes a characters ability to choose between right and wrong is the conduit in which integrity in measured. August Wilson, in the play Fences, creates a range, or spectrum, of judgments and/ or decisions to demonstrate the factors that shape an individuals ability to act justly.

Task
  1. Create another definition of integrity based on one of the characters in the play.
  2. Create a REAL LIFE Example FROM LIFE that further develops your idea about integrity.
  3. Relate the author's play to the ideas of integrity through the ENTIRE play.
  4. Decide upon a character that fully demonstrates the nature of integrity.
  5. Use at least two examples from the play to illustrate your perspective.
  6. Relate character to your real-life example.
  7. Create a statement that is an insightful conclusion about integrity based upon the character and real life/ literary examples.
  8. Develop an insightful idea about the nature of integrity

Integrity is having the will and respect to care for ones family and friends. A man of integrity is Carlos Santana. Someone who lived the pain of being poor has made a huge difference in life. He has taken his fame as a guitarist and turned his wealth into prosperity for those in need. Him and his wife Debra created the Milagro Foundation, which has donated over millions of dollars to this day. In the play Fences, Rose is a character who has well demonstrated integrity. She has lived her life as a mother and has taken good care of her family. When Troy had Alberta's baby and could not take care of her, Rose knew that she could not let this baby live on the streets with Troy, so she took care of her. That takes integrity. Like Santana, she has used her integrity to help people in need of saving. Integrity is shown by many different people and in many different ways. It will always benefit the world in a different way.

Integrity is the ability to put your life and beliefs on the line for one thing, whether it be for family, friends, ideals, or for the notion of respect. Integrity is not confined to the basis of rich and poor, or living and dead. Dead people showed respect and integrity when they were living. Common (the rapper) shows integrity through his music and his actions to help people in his home town. Coming from the South Side of Chicago, Common had the integrity to walk away from the life of a gunslinging drug dealer and become a mature individual who leads the black underground, grassroots rappers. Cory and Common are alike because they both had the integrity to walk away, in Cory's case he left his abusive father. Instead of creating a war zone Cory leaves to join the other working individuals and he becomes a successful individual himself. Leaving ones family and friends is very difficult especially when you reunite over a casket. Integrity comes not physically, but mentally and within not externally. It comes from the mind, heart, and soul.

I believe integrity is when an individual does the right thing even if it’s not expected. Someone in the world today that shows integrity is Oprah Winfrey; she has donated money, worked to better schooling in Africa and is a supporter of many foundations. Life is full of choices and I believe she has made many superior ones with helping others.
Through out Fences integrity has shown through it characters, the two characters that show integrity are Rose and Gabriel. Rose cares and loves the child that her husband Troy had with his mistress. This demonstrates how kind hearted and loving Rose is. Gabriel is a harmless human being who is always looking out for others never doing any harm to anyone. He is so innocent and kind to all. Integrity is one of the most important characteristic an individual can have. It makes a true, loving, genuine person who often succeeds in life.

Through the character of Troy, the definition of integrity would be an individual who takes responsibility for his or her own actions. Not because it is necessary or expected, but because that is the right thing to do. A real life example of this would be Michael Phelps. Phelps was caught smoking weed, and he apologized for his actions, promised the incident would never occur again, and worked hard to earn back the trust off his fans. It is true that Phelps did indeed make a large mistake, but he took responsibility for his actions. Wilson's idea about integrity is that a person who posses integrity is dependable and does the responsible thing, no matter what the situation might be. However, a person with integrity is not necessarily a good person overall. A character who displayed integrity was Rose. Rose was a faithful wife to Troy and a loving mother to Cory. She could have strived towards a better life, but her family was her responsibility, and she took care of them. Even after she found out that Troy had been unloyal to her, she stayed with her family because her child was still her responsibility, and she took take of him. When Troy brought Alberta's baby home, it was not her responsibility to take care of her, but nonetheless she did because she knew no one else would. Rose, similar to Phelps, took responsibility for things that had occurred that she could not change, such as Troy’s undevotion or Alberta's baby. Integrity means taking responsibility, and although a person might posse integrity, they may not be a good or kind person, such as Troy's father who was responsible but also cruel and sinful.

Integrity is the ability to trust one person and believe that they are always there for you. In the play Fences, Rose and Troy married each other to swear that they would always love each other and trust each other. In the second act, Troy’s integrity was a wreck for Rose. She trusted Troy and he betrayed her and now Rose can’t even trust him. Rose in this case treats everyone with respect and she shows how integrity can help in a way. Cory shows great integrity towards his mom, he believes that she’ll help him guide his future. Friendship is a real life example of how my definition of integrity works. Friendship is a life that only “friends” enjoy. Friends in this case trust each other and believe in having a good time with each other. If a ”betray” friend doesn’t have integrity, then the friend won’t trust him.
To conclusion, if somebody or someone has mislead their friendship, then it’s the end of a long relation. The nature is that people change over a period of time. She can change and some don't. It’s hard to be friends who cannot adapt to the world changing around us.

Integrity is having a code of personal moral ethics. And when a conflict faces you, you must have the ability to do the right thing and not let your feelings get in the way. For example at lunch today, i really wanted to get junk food, but i got fruit instead because it was the right thing to do! In the play Fences, August Wilson demonstrates integrity through the actions of key characters contrasting Troy. For instance when Rose took the baby from him even though he betrayed her. Another example is Gabe sticky with Troy even though Troy took advantage of him. Gabe might not have know better but it does not change what he did. This is similar to when a father is willing to take care of a baby, even if it is not his. Integrity is based largely on the environment in which a person is raised. For instance if someone someone raised in the "hood" might have a very different coed of ethics then someone raised in Arlington. Integrity is what everyone has inside them, what they know it right, although it takes great strength to be able to overcome your personal emotions to do what you know is right.

Rose most matches integrity due to the fact that she stays consistant throughout the play. Even though she is angry with Troy for cheating on her, she takes in her new step-daughter. Also she acts as Troy's voice of reason; she knows when he's doing something bad. Foster parents require integrity to voluntarily take on the resonsibility of rearing children that are not theirs. Those kind of people usually want to help because they know it's right. They listen to their voices of reason.

Integrity is making yourself a promise that you believe you can follow through on. A real life example is if you make a new-years resolution to get straight A’s in the upcoming school semester. August Wilson demonstrates his own personal belief of integrity through the character of Cory. Cory promises himself that he will not put up with his father, Troy, any longer, and he won’t let his father hold him back. At one point in the play, Cory stands up to Troy by refusing to say excuse me to him when he walks by him in his own house. It definitely took a lot of courage to stand up to his big father, and he promised himself he would. One of the most important points in the novel is when Cory refuses to go to Troy’s funeral. He says that at one point in his life he HAD to say no to his dad, and he did. Cory held true to his integrity and followed through on the promise that he had made to himself. If you make a big promise to your self and follow through on it, then you have some integrity.

Integrity is doing the right thing and having self-responsibility and self-control, especially in relationships with others. An example of this from life is Alex Rodriguez. This may seem to be a strange example, because of his recently revealed steroid use. That is most definitely not integrity. But he had his one shining moment of integrity when he came out straight and admitted to his steroid use. He took responsibility for his actions, and did not try to avoid them. That is not to say that Alex Rodriguez is a person of integrity (he definitely is not), but this one action was in fact a perfect example of integrity. Integrity is displayed by august Wilson in his drama Fences, through the character of Gabriel. Gabriel was constantly taken advantage of. The police would arrest him just because they knew he would pay the fine. Even though this wasn’t fair, Gabriel didn’t turn it into bad feelings and hatred. He just paid the fine without question. He also cared deeply for Troy, even though Troy had sent him to an asylum on accident. Of all of the characters in the play, Gabriel was probably the only one to believe that it had actually been an accident. He trusted Troy through the toughest times, and even pleaded with god to try to save Troy after he died. If Gabe had ever committed a crime or cheated, he would have admitted to it and taken responsibility for it, just like A-Rod did. The difference it that Gabe is a person of such integrity that he would never cheat in the first place. People of integrity are motivated to do the right thing, just because they know that it is the right thing. Doing the right thing is its own reward.

If a person has integrity, then they have good morals and are respectful to those that surround them. My uncle Jimmy demonstrates integrity through his dedication to helping children that are mental retarted. His son Patrick was diagnosed with Fragile X at a young age and he shows strength through his hard work, and cares very much about helping the foundation that may one day find a cure for his son. In the play Fences, August Wilson shows integrity through his characters. The one character that i believe fully embodies the meaning of integrity is Rose. Rose takes on the responsibility of raising Raynell, whom is not actually her daughter but the child of another woman her husband had an affair with. Also when she finds out about the affair she handles it calmly and with a mature attitude. Rose didnt chose to act in order to help herself, but for the good of others. People that have integrity are individuals from all around the world, with different color skin, can be poor or rich, and that is the beauty of life.

Integrity is sticking to your morals no matter what the situation. Someone who shows integrity in real life is Barack Obama. Obama sticks to his ideals and morals no matter what will happen. Troy does the same. Even though Troy is seen as a mean character in the play, he still shows integrity. When Cory and Troy fight over Cory saying excuse me, Troy is just trying to have Cory be respectable, like he raised him. Troy also shows integrity when he finds out about his new baby. instead of hiding his baby and having nothing to do with it he keeps his morals and tells rose, and helps raise it. Integrity can be looked at as a good thing, but is not always the easiest thing to do.

Integrity is doing the right thing even if it is hard and even if you don't get any credit for doing it. Rose shows this integrity by raising Raynell. She didn't have to take her under her arms but she did. A person with integrity would hold a door open for an old lady even if no one was looking to see you or congratulate you on your good dead. Another would be cleaning up a park. You don't need to do these things but it is good to do them and it shows your sense of integrity. Cory possesses integrity for going to Troy's funeral. Lyons possesses integrity for giving his dad back the money. There is an underlying sign of integrity in this play. The characters who show it are rewarded. Rose demonstrates integrity because she takes care of Raynell even though its not her baby. She also possesses integrity by sticking with Troy even though he was unfaithful. Even though if a persons integrity is not directly praised it will be rewarded in the future. Maybe you might go to heaven if your religious. But you will have a sense of pride. That is a fact.

Integrity is the ability to adapt to a drastic change in environment, and successfully persevere. A person who I believe in a certain situation possessed a great deal of integrity is George Bush. When we were attacked on 9/11, America was in complete awe. This was the first major attack on America in God knows how long. People do not give enough credit to Bush when it comes to how he reacted to this. Arguably this is the greatest hardship a president has had to overcome. Now, many people have different opinions on whether or not he made the right choice to declare war, but one thing is certain; he did not crumble in a time of crisis. I believe this is very similar to Rose in the play Fences. When Troy informs Rose of him having a child with another woman, obviously she is devastated. Yet Rose does not let this affect her treatment of her children. After taking a major fall, Rose possess the ability to get right back up again and react. Rose is also proposed the accommodation of another child in her life; except this time it is not her own. Rose does what is right for the child and chooses to adopt it, once again showing immediate reaction to sudden change. Integrity is a word with multiple definitions, but Rose and Bush seem to really come to the root meaning. Both of these people deserve immense amounts of acknowledgment and respect.

To have integrity is to have the ability to follow your own personal morals and sets of rules. A man who embodies integrity is Barack Obama. Throughout his life, President Obama, through politics and volunteering, continuously makes America a better place to live everyday. Rose from the play fences by august Wilson is a symbol of integrity. Rose chooses to care for a baby born out of her husband’s affair. By putting aside her own wants and interests and helping another, Rose shows true integrity. Another Character who repersents integrity is Bono. He is constantley being honest with troy and atempts to steer him in the right direction.Integrable people not only influence their own lives but also those that surround them.

Integrity is shown through ones’ fear, hard work, and disbelief; Integrity is presented by having the ability to push forward through obstacles and pain, nonetheless expressing and a vulnerable but stronger side to the person. Through integrity Moral values and ethnics are learned and strengthen. An example of a person that exampled integrity is Britney Spears. Throughout her career as a pop star singer, she had had many misfortunes on the way. One incident was when making the mistake of marry Kevin Federline and suddenly having kids with him. Leaving her in a state of depression which lead on to her outrages behaviors like attacking the paparazzi with her umbrella, shaving her head, and driving in her car with her kids not having seat belts on. The public soon dislike her and her music in total. Realizing this is not how she wanted to live her life anymore; she decided to start over fresh, leaving Kevin, and making one incredible CD and a really good tour, which led her back to her success and being liked once again by many. Through out Fences integrity has shown through it characters, the two characters that show integrity are Rose and Cory. Rose accepting Alberta’s baby Raynell as her own child; she showed her rationale to her understanding that Raynell is innocent even though she was born out of a sinful and disloyal marriage. Rose dismisses Troy as her spouse, but finds forgiveness for the child born to her shameful husband because of his stupid decision he made in his lifetime. By the end of the play it shows the lasting effects of Troy's life on his loved ones. Troy's relationships with Bono, Rose, and Cory were and destroyed in the end, they gather together in his honor anyways. When Cory and Raynell sing together the song Troy always use to sing by himself about the dog named Blue , Cory slowly forgives Troy because he finally realizes witnesses the love and the lessons that Troy passed on to his children. Cory experiences the song as cue that Troy's behavior were gather from what Troy familiarized with his father and what he knew in life. Integrity means the knowledge of forgiving one’s bad habits, and doing what you think is right and justified to the individual. Integrity makes up who we are today; whether we take that in good use or not, but we all are accustomed to see and do what is right and what is wrong.

Integrity is doing the right thing although it might not be the most advantageous to you or the easiest thing to do. One person who displays integrity is Cam Neely. Cam has used his fame and money to start a foundation dedicated to defeating cancer. He has done a lot and raised a lot of money for cancer research. Cam is truly a man of integrity. One character the displays integrity in Fences is Rose. Rose cares for Troy’s baby although he cheated on her and had the baby with another woman. Rose does not want to punish the baby for Troy’s faults. Also she lets Troy stay in the house after he had cheated on her. Cam and Rose both made choices that display integrity. They both made choices that were not advantageous to them or the easiest thing to do but they did it because it was the right thing to do. Integrity can be found in all people, rich or poor, and it displays the good in people.

Integrity is the pursuit of truth and happiness the strength of this is directly influenced by the surrounding environment. In the real world this is demonstrated every day. An example would be Monsta Cody, he had many choices but because of his environment he was unable to make that right decision. Similar to Monsta was the decisions revealed through August Wilson’s play, Fences. He shaped the characters in a way that they were all influenced in some way by the environment and because of it all there decisions were hindered from it. Rose is possibly the best character that demonstrates the qualities of integrity for she made many resolutions that went against that of her environment and because of it she did not ever have any regrets. Rsoe's decisions that reflected these characteristics were simply her dedication to Troy and her loving choice to raise the baby even from her history of being someone elses child. Integrity and environment run hand in hand by shaping the personalities of all human beings, because of this it is only a chosen few who make the best of themselves.

Integrity is a moral force, that pushes you to do what is right over what you want. A prime example of a holder of integrity is Bill Gates. Although there are many other things that could be done with his money, Bill Gates chooses to donate a lot of his money to charities and good causes. In Fences by August Wilson, there are many different instances in which integrity is expressed. Integrity is supported through the character of Troy. Integrity would not be taught through following Troy's ways though. Troy teaches the readers what not to do. It is seen that Troy does not possess integrity, and the readers find out how miserable his life becomes. Then there is Rose. Rose is one of the characters who clearly does show integrity. Even after Troy cheats on her, and even after she went through years of violence, Rose chose to stay in the life of Troy for one reason...the baby. There was no clear reason for Rose to help Troy with the baby, except for the fact that she had a good heart. Rose realized that if she left, one more innocent life would be left in the hands of corruption. For this reason, Rose becomes the mother of the baby, at the cost of staying around Troy. The similarities between Rose and Bill Gates are clear. Both integral minds put aside some of their desires to help those who are less fortunate. Through the characters portrayed by August Wilson, and the real life heroes that touch our lives every day, integrity is marked as a valuable trait to hold. Without integrity, the entire world and system of balances, would be thrown off drstically and we would be sent into a state of chaos.
